Nigel Hunter
Nigel’s current sculptural work in clay and stone emanates from a continuing fascination with nature and its geometry and how aspects of those might transition into more abstract forms.
Inspired by a minimal aesthetic and Japanese philosophy the idea is to capture an essence with visual simplicity. Carving stone by hand is a physical, immersive and meditative process but he hopes the sculptures also capture the wonderful energy and movement so prevalent in the nature that surrounds us.
Since moving to East Sussex there its no doubt that the immediate environment of the South Downs and the sea have had an impact on his making.
Lucy Goffin and Barbara Kennington
Working individually and as Material Being, Lucy and Barbara provide a unique combination of textile experience.
Lucy Goffin’s background is embedded in textile creation; her intricately detailed and machine and hand-stitched work sensitively pieces together layers of fabric and colour.
Fashion design trained Barbara Kennington has enjoyed a long career tracking colour and fabric trends. Her more recent work explores landscape drawing abstracted as hand-stitched work.
As Material Being, Lucy and Barbara recognise our increasing desire to wear individually crafted garments that directly connect the wearer with the makers by creating unique and contemporary embroidered clothing pieces that withstand the pressure of time and fashion.
Bobbie Kociejowski
Bobbie is a handweaver of contemporary textiles. Working on a traditional floor loom, she most enjoys experimenting with colour and the interaction of warp and weft, the perfect vehicle for creating the colours that come from optical mixing.
Bobbie’s inspiration is derived from nature – land, sea and sky.
Bobbie weaves with silk, cashmere and fine wool to produce scarves and shawls that are both warm and luxurious.
Annie McManus
Annie has always loved drawing, it underpins everything she does.
Annie also takes great pleasure in the colour, texture, versatility and expressiveness of paint and pastel, crayon and collage.
All natural things are an inspiration, the human form, the impact of man on the landscape, still life, ugliness and awkwardness as much as beauty, maybe more so.
Kathie Murphy
Kathie Murphy started jewellery evening classes with Jonathan Swan at The Workshop in Lewes aged 14. Following a degree and post grad diploma in the subject she has specialised in jewellery made from Polyester resin for 30 years and continues to explore the colourful possibilities of this material.
Kathie has had two books published with A&C Black, Resin Jewellery, and Design and Make non-precious Jewellery.
Syann van Niftrik
Drawing freely from the environment and life, without being representational, Syann’s designs reflect on a wide range of thoughts and ideas.
Syann uses a variety of metals and simple techniques that rely on form and tactile appeal to make pieces that move comfortably. Syann likes exploring all these elements
Jean Scott-Moncrieff
Jean’s work is characterised by simplicity of form and purity of line – classical but contemporary-influenced by artefacts from ancient Mediterranean cultures – particularly evident in the collections held at the Villa Giulia, Rome and the Heraklion Museum, Crete.
Jean uses traditional hand tools and techniques; piercing, hammering and forging high carat gold and silver, embellished with old cut gemstones, cabachons and beads. The stones are meticulously selected – the flaws and inclusions add to their unique properties. Each piece is hand worked using very fine emery papers resulting in a lustrous matt finish, sometimes with burnished edges.
Jean has exhibited widely, notably at Goldsmiths’ Fair in the City of London and Dazzle at the Southbank since 2003. Jean has worked for many private clients, designing and making new commissions as well as remodelling precious old pieces for the 21st century. Jean is a Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Gold and Silver Wyre Drawers; a member of The Goldsmiths Company Directory and the Crafts Council Directory.
